Jumping in a bit late here, and not having read the
entire thread...

You're way overcomplexicatizing things given some
of your reading audience.

950 ft2 roof / 177 ft2 pool = 5.37, so for every inch
that falls on his roof, his pool sees something less
than 5.37 (subtracting whatever undefined amount
overflows the gutters). Add the inch that falls
directly into the pool, and 1" of rainfall adds
something less than 6.37" to the pool.
The normal rain fall for the rainiest month (August) in Tampa is 7.6".
http://www.rssweather.com/climate/Florida/Tampa/

No matter if you use which simple arithmetic is used it still takes 3"
of rain in one day, not accounting for rain run-off, splash-off and
wind blow-off and not collected, (or half the rain fall of the
rainiest month of the year) to collect the 2000 gallons claimed, -
which is 1) non-sense and 2) not helpful to anyone thinking about
building a cistern for themselves.

True. But the information is posted anyway for those interested in the
subject matter. Each inch I collect comes out to roughly 104 gallons. I
could easily double or triple my collection efforts by adding gutters
all around my house. As I increase my collected water usage, I will add
more gutters to make up the difference.

I can't figure out how my pool is now full.

Pool was 14 inches low on water. It drizzled 2 days ago, I got maybe 1/2

rain. Now my pool is overflowing.

Update:

Well, after several months of collecting rain water in my above ground
swimming pool, my city water bill went from $81 a month down to $13 a
month. I only use the rain water to flush the toilets, wash our cars,
and washing machine. My lawn is thick and green using nothing but
laundry waste water as a fertilizer.

I had a hole in my pool last week which caused it to lose all but 1 foot
of water. We had very hard rain for the past 2 days which over filled
the pool.

During the drier season, I installed an air pump driven valve into my
shallow well that keeps the pool topped off during heavy water usage. We
seem to use more water than we can collect due to unusual dry weather.
We are now into the rainy season, which keeps my pool topped off without
any problem.

I installed 2 275 water totes just for laundry waste water. It gets tied
directly into my sprinkler system with a simple float switch which opens
the valve. When the totes are empty, the valve closes and the sprinkler
draws from the shallow well.

Jim what do you use to pump the water to the toilets? I have a

During the rainy season (here in Portland, OR) I send most of what
I capture down the overflow. So putting it to some good immiediate
use would be great. Also, since our sewer rated are calculated
based on our winter water usege, I would save some money by not
using city water durring the rainy season.
