With my luck they will do a bigpond and close their servers tomorrow.

So why purchase anything at all if thats your concern?
Usenet-News has been around a lot longer than bigpond...

Seriously, it's hard to imagine *anything* that is available through a
binary news group that you can't find anywhere else on the web for free.

That's it. If he can do that he has a case. If he can't, then his
assumptions have caused his grief.

**Of course he has no case. He's just bleating about the loss of his
NGs. I've been a customer of Telstra a few times over the years. I keep
all my contracts with all my previous ISPs. Not one guarantees free
access to newsgroups. That includes Telstra.

All he has to do is pay 5 Bucks and he'll have access to NGs. Not
binaries, of course. That costs extra.

Agreed. I've been "on-line" since before the web existed and I've never seen
anyone advertise Usenet as part of their "package". Most have had server
settings that they'd tell you about if you *asked*, but none have ever
handed them out without asking and I think it's ridiculous to assume that
it's as legitimate a part of your package as having an email address.

Especially when probably over 90% of clients probably don't even know what
Usenet actually is.

As I mentioned in another post, I don't know why he has such a weed uphis
arse about binary groups when I would imagine just about anything they
offered could be found elsewhere on the web.

And probably more reliably :)

Did I ever say it did, just as it probably does non guarantee the mail
server.

Thery guarantee you a number of email adsresses in their terms and
conditions, and that would include providing a mail server in order to use
them.

Internode used to, not sure if they still offer it as part of the
contract but they still offer access to newsgroups via Astraweb.

**Bollocks. They ALL guarantee a mail server and at least one email
address. NONE guarantee newsgroup access.

Pay the 5 Bucks and shut the **** up.

Not necessarily, I used to download shit loads from certain binary
groups - mostly music in lossless formats of artists you'll never see
on bittorrrent. A few other things come to mind too. I should get
around to setting up a binary client again and check those groups out,
I kind of lost track of them after moving from the mainland 5 years
ago.

**Back in the 90s and early 00s, most ISPs offered free newsgroup
access. NONE guaranteed it, however. IME, Telstra's newsgroup service
was second only to the expensive, dedicated newsgroup access organisations.

I have that already and it costs nothing, eternal-september

Anyway the $5 you are talking about is that per month?

I guess it depends what you're into. I used binaries religiously years ago,
but with the emergence of websites like Xhamster and PornTube there is
little point these days :)

Newsgroup access was in Internode's advertising when I first signed up,
don't know if that constitutes a guarantee but it sure sounded like it.
I certainly took it to mean guaranteed access and so did lots of other
people who complained like crazy when some fool decided to shut it off,
they had so many complaints it was back within a couple of days.
No mention of it in their current offerings though.

Yep, the pr0n is ubiquitous these days :)

If you are happy with that. I'm posting from E-S right now, but there
are other intangible benefits of a real news server such as retention.
It's good to know that you can retrieve a post from over 8.5 years ago
or having the full 100000+ list of groups, for example.
