CNN article on 50 best jobs -- #1 is software

You think that's bad, try being told to go over to the checkin for
international flights when going to New Mexico.

Yeah, there was a politician from NM (governor?) in the 80s who was
in trouble with the IRS for not filing as "US Resident living
outside the US".

No, but Hill and Bill are from Arkansas. Hmm, I see your point.

Hillary isn't from Arkansas. She lived there for a few years,
but she's from a suburb of Chicago. From there she went to
Wellesley and Yale.

Even if you disagree with her politics, I don't see how she
could be classified as a "Hillbilly".

Those are the Brits of old who failed to assimilate into the
bigger US culture.

Strange as we don't have anyone like that in the UK...

How about Benny Hill? ;-)

Now sadly departed. But he was into [lots of] women not pigs.

BTW I was not suggesting everyone in the USA was a hillbilly or into
pigs....

Some like goats :)

It is just that I was not sure where the "hilbilly" areas were
considered to be. Just as most Americans would not know where the black
country in the UK was.

Having read the James Harriot books at least twice,
once by myself and once to my daughter when she
was little, I think I got a pretty good description
of rural UK life. Whether that's the same as
black country, I don't know.

The black country (east of Brum) was industrial

that includes New Hampshire.

Do you still have your accent? I somehow escaped from New Orleans

Pretty much. You point to a Reader's Digest view of the world, expect a
Reader's Digest answer. You're showing mass-consumer media articles to
a technical audience.

I just finished writing a book on how to be an embedded engineer. I
think it's a much better job than being a pure software guy, especially
in the sense those clowns meant it. Hanging your career on app-level
shrinkwrap crap is pretty much painting an outsourcing target on your
back.

I want to buy this one, could you please provide information?

Best regards,

A screeching harridan can be mistaken for a hillbilly. The
screeching hides the accent, and all that remains is
the impression of someone you don't want to know. Plus
the BO, but you have to get close to notice that. Has all
the teeth, it appears.

Good grief, no one (Hill included) where she's from or what she is. She
was originally from IL, but that did work for her political aspirations,
so took root in AK. That worked for a while, but was looking for whiter
pastures. DC worked, for a while (as long as she has guards). Then when
the bitch couldn't make it in AK or IL, she landed in NY. Now, you tell
me where she's from and what she wants!

Spot on!!!

Last Friday night was a blast - we'd just put the finishing touches on
our latest XBOX-360 game and the team sent out for beer and pizza and
'play-tested' it until the early hours!

A bit of change of pace this week - got in Monday morning to find that
the military lasers needed tweaking - *again*! <groan> Thankfully that
was done by lunchtime, which left the rest of the afternoon to devote to
my freelance projects!

Anyway, gotta run - about to fly out to Time Warner to do some work on
the special effects software for some new Jessica Alba movie and
apparently she wants to meet me first...

Regards,

I suspect a more likely candidate is coal mining territory.

The James Herriot books are based in the Yorkshire Dales IIRC.
The word dales is from the Norse word for valley.
That area is green and largely agricultural.

The Black Country is exactly the opposite: it was so named because it was
blackened by the pollution of heavy industry. It was a heavy coal consuming
area in the industrial revolution.

It isn't really black anymore, as industry became less heavy and polluting,
but the name stuck.
