Sony DA555ES "PROTECTOR" message !!HELP!!

I'll start by saying I know absolutely nothing about electronics but I get very determined when it comes to projects like this. Now,I have this sound system that has to be atleast 10 years but probably older than that. I decided to fire it up for the first time in years and it seemed to work fine until....I tried to turn it up (not ridiculously loud but pretty loud) and the music shut off and the "PROTECTOR" message was displayed. I also came in contact with this message when I tried to turn the bass up but that's not a huge deal. However, it's very frustrating that I can't turn it up past a certain point and the message sometimes even comes up when there's a particularly "harsh" part of a song. Most forums say that this is a fan problem but I'm wondering if anybody knows the specific procedure necessary to fixing my problem. Thanks a lot and I'll try to answer any questions that you may have concerning the system.

It sounds like your device is detecting an over-temperature condition and shutting down to protect itself.

It may indeed be a fan that's no longer working. It might also be that you have the wrong speakers attached, or that you're just turning the volume up too much.

edit: doesn't look like there's any fans. Is there plenty of room around the device to allow for good circulation? Does the large silver heatsink get hot?
