I don't drill holes either. At least not since 30 something years ago.
Why are you making your own boards ?

Graham

Well yeah... When you order boards...

I take on overly challenging electronics projects and nothing works
the first time and everything changes.
And...I'm often learning in uncharted waters, experimenting and
goofing up..
I can't afford ordering one board every time I make a correction,
optimize or blow up a board.
And that's why I make my own boards.
Exposed and etched within 1 hour.

Ceramics are available in this value - a bit pricy in low volumes but you may be able to find them
somewhere else with better low-volume pricing

Yikes! $6.15 to order 1 from Digikey.ca

I'll keep it mind if the board gets mass produced.

We use some SMD electrolytics in military applications. We have not
seen any mechanical problems in shake-and-bake testing or battlefield
use.

We glue the cases to the PCB after the PCB is soldered and washed,
using two-part Loctite E-20NS epoxy.

There is quite a few cheaper ceramics at Newark. For some reason, some of
the ceramic capacitors at Digikey ridiculous prices.

Yes, you can just feed the pins through the base and bend them
sideway. The base should be made of plastic with high melting
temperature. It should cost only pennies each, except for the first
piece.

Yes, if you don't have to pay for the first piece.

A small bit of FR4 with holes and two (or more as necessary) pads ought
to do it nicely.

Yes, but making the mold to stamp out the tiny FR4 is not going to be
any cheaper than plastic.

Mold?
I'm thinkn perhaps the mount can be manufactured by a laser cutting
process.

Something like this if done with plastic (teflon?):
The cap is pushed onto the base and the leads fish through sideways.
(Uhhh.. that'll be tricky..But..it's slippery teflon.)
The lead ends are bent and become the feet.

------
| |
| | <throughhole cap
-------
+ +
--------+ + ---------
+=======/ \=========+ <hole for lead
_/ ----------------------- \_ <shaped leads for smd feet

Oops ..can't say teflon anymore...It's PTFE :p

I'm thinkn about the ways with FR4 too.

Starting bid $1.00 each on E*bay next week ;P

Too expensive for mass productions.

Depending on how many you are making. Plastic could be less than a
nickel or dime.

So, you want to laser cut a FR4 or plastic to save on drillings FR4?

Mouser # 81-GCM32DR72A225K64L is a ceramic X7R 2.2 uF, 100V for $1.26 each
in single quantity. They say they have 2000 available to ship immediately.

That's a scary round number and implies buy-by-the-reel. Not singles..
But I'll check..
