Question about SMPS repair

I agree that fusible resisistors, NTCs, PTCs, electrolytic capacitors, rechargeable batteries etc have a shelf life. Whether it’s hours vs heat vs stress is dependant on temperature, quality, usage and age. They all play a part. Obsolescence or designed obsolescence is hear say.
Older linear power supplies are probably still working today, albeit cap replacement may be due or necessary. SMPS on the other hand run at much higher frequencies and fail more often due to stress.
Design also plays a part. Why engineers place electrolytics next to a heat source is anyone’s guess.
Sometimes new glues or vibration goo is great at the time but turns conductive over time. It’s only later on that we see the results. 80s CB radio is a prime example.
Electrolytic caps should be replaced as a matter of course on older equipment. They do dry out, they do leak and they do cause the majority of problems with inrush while charging. And of course, they fail short circuit.
RE masks, I agree.
