So if a battery can do 125a CCA which is 30 seconds, why couldn't I get 125amp out of it doing pulses? pulses should be easier then 30 sec continuous right?
 
As I stated earlier you are not concerned with either rating, you need to instead focus on potential short circuit current if you want to know what the battery 'can' produce before damage as Steve said...

It's not the same as either CCA or PCA, those numbers are not what you seek, forget them...
 
Why 2000 pulses per second? A coil gun would typically have 1 pulse per shot fired on each coil.

Sorry Steve I missed that u told me how to figure out the short circuit amps. And yes I want my coilgun to be able to shot super rapid fire, something I haven't anyone has done. Which is way many stages in my design are needed and which is why I was "hoping" to use just power from batteries and avoid caps since there really isn't much time for charging. Adding additional stages is much easier for me in my design

That's my goal one day not right away. I'm trying to buy good enough components to not have to upgrade parts later. From what I've read my IGBTs should handle 2000Hz.

Im having some trouble figuring out what IGBT driver I need, will any work? Also can the current from a NOR gate power the driver?
 
If it were not the fact that this would be impossbile, for too many reasons to list, you would have a rocket engine producing 880 lbs of thrust. Have fun.

I'd like to think that this topic has veered off into Bonkersburg but we may have been there from the outset. Whether it has or hasn't this project is dangerously beyond the capabilities of supak111. Every one here should ask themselves if they could sleep at night if he lived next door to you? No Joke! :(

Its a 100% new design, no one out there has tried this. I may have made it sound dangerous, huge, TOO POWERFUL but believe me its really no. If I told everyone exactly how I'm planing on doing it everyone would understand but I simply can not share my design until I try it myself and see if its anything that could be worth something in the future.

I am an inventor by profession, def not an electrical engineer lol so that is where I need help. My design is solid and I want to test it. Right now its simply down to getting all the right electrical components which you gentlemen seem too know so much about. Prototype I'm building is just for proof of concept, most of the big stuff such as: 2000 shots per sec, or 100 stages... is just hypothetical for now, I ask questions like those because it helps me understand better if I can actually get this design of mine to something that I could one day pitch to military (was end goal from the start).

But from hours and hours worth of research no one has even mentioned such a design, let alone tried it. I'm about 99% sure it hasn't been thought of, if it was I wouldn't really be wasting my time stealing someone elses idea know full well I couldn't do much with it "legally" if someone already claimed it.

It's nearly laughable that you state that when you have shown a huge lack of (basically no) understanding of even the most basic principles of operation and science behind this technology... How can you even suggest you have a solid design with such a lack of understanding and no working model?

Just because you can dream it in fantasy land doesn't make it a solid idea in the real world where real world physics do actually apply...

And by the way, I was not joking about the 880 lb of recoil thrust, that was calculated via basic physics. If this is to be a hand-held weapon, I hope it is our enemies who get it first :)

Capacitors are way to big and heavy, my end goal is to make this coilgun portable and to be able to use it just like you would a hunting rifle.

I'm buying super expensive, but powerful and light lithium car batteries for that reason.

If I do it with heavy/bulky capacitors then there isn't going to be any portability in this coilgun so I shouldn't even buy the lithium batteries in that case.

I want to make a better coilgun then what everyone else has already done. I've researched hundreds of other peoples designs, now I want to take what I've learned and make a better one.

Just to make it clear what the 880 lb recoil would do, if the gun weighs 32 pounds (1 slug of mass), then an unrestrained gun, after firing for 1 second would reach 880 ft / sec or 600MPH!

Bob, the standard issue WWII M1 Garand weighed in at near 8 pounds empty. I was never a fan of the M16 but I'm guessing probably closer to 5 pounds empty. It would be interesting to see what your calculations return at this weight.
