Ok true. I was only using it because slingshot ammo is cheap and easy to find, I don't need it to be so strong actually.

Slingshot ammo is steel ball bearings

PS spherical projectiles fly great if spun like a bullet out a riffled barrel, and military is using tungsten as projectiles for railguns cant get much harder then that.

This is a misconception shared by the masses of the uninformed. I suggest you google how armor piercing ammo is made. We DO NOT want hard steel of any kind making contact with our barrels.

Chris

FYI: There's a reason that spherical projectiles were abandoned a long time ago. There's also a reason that hard projectiles (steel ball bearings) are considered as verboten as pouring sulfuric acid down your barrel.

Not totally verboten in all places, standard fanfare for waterfowl hunting nowadays and required by law in many areas... Don't want to give the ducks and fish lead poisoning... :p Also hollow steel spheres are used for a low penetration home protection load in shotguns...

But, verboten in most other shooting scenarios, not only because of that armor piercing thing but also because of ricochet... Round steel shot would turn a gunfight into a pinball machine, especially in an urban environment...

But, that is getting off topic since the projectiles at this point will likely be rolling out the barrel not flying...

Maybe we should have a coil gun contest. First one to pierce a cardboard target wins. Of course the projectile and target would have to be specified to put us all on equal ground.

I like that idea, I my self am building a coil gun and would totally participate in contest!

If you want a challenge hang a 12cm (6 inch) square of 200 lb text corrugated cardboard from two strings so it's free swinging... Shoot at it from a distance in excess of 25 feet (7.6 meters) using a traditional 'slug' shaped projectile vs a needle/arrow... If you can punch said cardboard using a hand held and portable unit with those basic specs you are doing quite well as a hobbyist build...

OK, I see I need to clarify my statements regarding steel projectiles.

First up is steel bird shot. Yes, the EPA forced it on us and bird hunters hate it. It doesn't have the ballistics of lead shot and manufacturers were forced to try all kinds of shot cup and coating tricks to protect shotgun barrels from the damage that steel shot will inflict and it's not trivial.

Second on the list is armor piercing ammo, which is fired from rifled barrels, which experienced chamber pressures much greater than shotguns. Whether it's steel or depleted uranium they are jacketed, usually in copper to protect the barrel. The barrel would be destroyed in short order with a steel on steel scenario. Only the core is hard.
