But nothing bad ever happens in Canada, does it?
Never claimed that, just stated a fact that the above was the case in
some states. Canada does have tight gun control and
a homicide rate of 1.85 homicides per 100,000 population. The last time
I checked the USA's rate was 5.64 per 100,000.

Being gainfully unemployed :) I qualify for TennCare, TN's substitute for
medicaid
or medicare (can't keep the two separated.) for so-called "poor" and
low-income
uninsured. I've resisted because I'm philosophically against such
programs but my
friends and family have about convinced me to join. They keep reminding
me of how
many hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes I've paid.

TennCare's reimbursement for doctors is so low that only the worst accept
TennCare.
I'll continue paying out of pocket for GP visits and probably even
specialists when I
need them. TennCare will be sort of a catastrophic back-stop in case of
major
hospitalization and to pay for my prescriptions. The co-pay is only a
couple of bux
per script. The state also has a diabetics assistance program that I
think pays all
costs associated with the disease. I've been retired less than a year so
I'm still
figuring all this stuff out.

If you have chronic conditions then you may have to state-shop to pick out
a state
that has the best low/un-employed medical benefits. Until TN made some
reforms a
couple of years ago it looked like I was going to have to find another
state to live
in.

I was in TN when they started TennCare. The percentage of the population
getting state medical care, which is what
TN(onlywantsthepoorpeoplesvotes)Care is, quickly jumped to the highest in
the nation. I think at one time it was around 30%. Here's a few things
that was discovered. First, small employers discovered they could drop
their company offered health care and save lots of money. Heck they could
even offer more money to their employees so everyone was happy. Second, a
lot of people were coming from out of state and applying. TN is a long thin
state which means it doesn't take that long to drive into or out of it.
They discovered this when they raised the sales tax rate and a lot of
businesses near the state lines started losing money. I lived in the Ft.
Campbell/Clarksville area and I stopped buying everything in TN I could.
Very much so when a Lowe's and Tractor Supply Company were built in
Hopkinsville, KY.

Its nice when you can get someone else to pay for something. I'd like to
thank all those out there who are helping me buy my house and raise my kids
with the income tax breaks I get each year which you don't. An even bigger
thank you to all of you in GA who go above and beyond by buying lottery
tickets because you will be putting both of my kids through college with
GA's HOPE system (unless the system crashes before they get there). Now
ya'll keep it up because in a few year you'll be helping me even more, I'm
planning on starting my own business and there are a lot of nice pay less
taxes items in there.

One of these days people might wise up and demand a flat tax but I doubt it.
The majority of people out there are just too stupid to get it.

My nearest Costco is over 100 miles away in another state.....

I'm not averse to moving out of Missouri

Check out any state on the west coast (CA, OR, WA) and the more socialist

Geez, $500 for blood work? I'm glad I'm in Canada, its covered under my
provincial hospital plan, as are all doctors visits.
I don't know why you guys put up with the system you have.

Because competition within the system keeps it the best system in the world.
Our problem isn't a health care crisis as its a legal system crisis. About
10 years ago I was talking to a friend who is an OBGY he told me he was
paying $250,000 per year just for malpractice insurance. I hate to think of
what he's paying today. When it seems everyone coming to the docs office is
being followed by a dozen lawyers a doc is going to order every test he can
think of to cover his butt if he's sued.

BTW, standard questions about Canadian health care. How long does it take
to get joint (knee or hip) surgery? How long for cataract surgery? How
long is the wait for a non-emergency MRI? CAT scan? Why are so many
Canadians coming to the US and paying for health care? Why does it seem a
lot of doctors would rather work in the US than Canada?

we don't have a choice I guess

they say we live in a free market society in the US
(can buy what I want where I want).... but in reality
its only free market for "some" things..... mostly
manufactured goods

But try buying drugs from another country..... or
health insurance form another country... or even form a
state outside the one you live in!

That's because the nanny government wants to protect you. And this is the
very same government people want to let run the medical system!!!

Hmm....I'm too far away form the border...... two hrs
north of St Louis

Look around, there used to be groups who would charter a bus to drive to
Mexico or Canada to buy their drugs.

Remember, it's the land of the free.:)

You are free to be treated like shit if you do not fit into the
american dream..

Myself, I will pay a maximum of about USD 250 a year for medical aid.
Weather I have to go to hospital, the doctor or pharmacy. It even get
the taxi to and from the hospital/doctor covered if I cannot ride with
public transport due to my medical condition.

Even heard that the Norwegian health care is mentioned in a new moore*
movie.

But then again, I live in a socialist wellfearstate.

PS: Please dont tell anyone that we are mutch ritcher per capita than
the US.

*That somewhat fat guy who likes to blame everybody but himself.

I'll point out again that the 'health care crisis' is really a legal system
crisis. How hard is it for you to sue your doc and win? I'm willing to bet
its a LOT harder than here.

Let's just say I do not live on the North American continent. I live on
a very small island in a resort. When I went to get a birth certificate for
my last kid, they didn't know what to do, because no one is ever born
here.... Many areas are accessible by ferry only. But, our beach was voted
best in the US!!!!

so where do you live?

Sorry, but this hits a nerve. The next sentence out of most people's
mouths is 'there outta be a law.' And that law is usually socialized
medicine. The health insurance companies are for-profit companies; they
can't have you eating up all their profits, can they? At this point, they
have the legal right to cherry pick, but handing the whole thing over to the
govt is not the answer....
We tell our kids to become doctors and then bitch because doctors charge
us $500/hr. I have instructed my kids to avoid becomeing doctors because the
selfish people of my generation are about to vote for socialised medicine
where they will get paid about the same as the average auot mechanic.
Rely on your self, do what you can do, and leave the rest up to God.
Jim, (a non-cell phone, non-giant tv, non-name brand clothes,
non-advertising believing, tight-fisted American.
IOW, you don't need half of what you think you do.....

ok agree with you for the most part Jim

My point was..... that I do NOT mind buying my own
personal health insurance with BIG deductible...and
self insuring up to say 10k dollars

BUT..... that can NOT buy such major med insurance
cause one you can not compare policies as they are all
over the place (apples to oranges).... and two they
cherry pick who they want to take on

Would it hurt for the govmint to say provide the
"framework" such that an HSA acct/major med approach
would be obtainable for people like me? IOW..... the
govt regulates the insur companies to provide say ten
standardized plans.....and to allow ALL to buy a plan?

I'm sure it's fun.... but I'm to poor and like NOT
being in debt to take any ANY unnecessary risks!

I guess you have a point there..... just get a bunch of
credit cards and charge it all to them.... and worry
abt paying later huh?
There's always a home equity loan if it gets bad. Terminal illnesses are
covered by Medicaid.

Well no home for me so no home equity..... but agree

well...we are getting a bit off topic.... but it's been
a good discussion...I've learned a lot

What I like is that it has been "out of box"
thinking..... and everyone has been good at this

I don't think any of us here think like typical
Americans.....and I'm happy for that.

I guess my "belief system" has changed abt the work
world.....and American system

I used to be the kind of person that felt "if I work
really hard for my company...they will respect me and
take care of me when I need them" BULSHIT!!! They
throw yo away in a heart beat now days!!

ONE very important thing; ZONING!!!!! Do not move into any area before

I'm good on that here in Missouri

There are lots of places one can buy land and do
anything you WANT with it!!

You want a windmill? Just erect it

Just had a thought....

Since you are pushing 50..... do you get yearly exams
such as colonoscopy, etc?

If yes...do you just pay out of pocket for that?

Our taxes are not a lot different then yours, our top Federal tax rate is
29%, I believe yours is 35%.
My tax bracket is 15.5% ( $37,179 or under), but after deductions I paid
less than $2000.00.

Do you have any idea what you total tax rate is? I ask because I think
Canada has a national sales tax (VAT?) as well as other taxes.

Here in GA I pay the feds an income tax as well as FICA and medicare. I
also pay property tax on my land and house, PERSONAL property tax (on each
vehicle) and a state and local sales tax on everything I buy with my already
taxed money. I don't have enough data yet to say what my total tax is (I
just added a Quicken category for sales taxes) but I know its high. Now
with that said I'm willing to bet it would be a lot lower than yours.
