Many of these clocks seems to have a single component failure, VW is not known for stable power, and little by way of protection circuitry, 40 year old filter caps that sit 30 years do little to protect the IC from surge when tried out after storage, most people probably dont consider this.
Ill point out that this is a repair of the electronic portion not any mechanical portion of the clock (thankfully)
