still need bunches of 1/4-40 nuts

1/4 inch dia thread by xx threads per inch ?

Yeah, that's the way Imperial sizes are spec'd here in Leftpondia.
Smaller sizes have numbers like #8-32, which is about an M4, larger
sizes are fractional size by threads per inch, such as 1/2-13 (about
an M12).
Dear Don,

since you're a great one for giving advice may I suggest in return that you're
unlikely to find such stuff in the local hardware store. It's rather more likely
you need a company trading from an industrial park/estate.

Graham

They're specialist electronic hardware, and fairly easily gotten, but
the overhead is too high for a few hundred dollars worth of relatively
heavy stuff for it to be worth most people's while.

Best regards,
Spehro Pefhany

Sure.

McMaster Carr has them for twenty cents each and refuses to discount in
any quntity.

Allied has them for $0.17 each in 250 quantity (discounted from $0.24/1).
They are nickel plated, C&K/ITT/Cannon 709901201, Allied 676-9302.

Mouser has them for $0.15 each in 1000 quantity.

Jameco has their part number 578321PS for $0.13 each in qty 500+.

No, this is not a misprint. 1/4-40 is an ultrafine nut used on submini
switches and miniature phone jacks.

Just this weekend I wanted to tap a hole for a panel-mount pot, which
turns out to be a 5/16-32, another unusual size.

Have you tried contacting the switch/jack manufacturer to see if they
know of a source or can supply the screws?

Pricing goal is two cents each in lots of 5000 to 50,000.

There are plenty of nuts on alt.usnet.kooks, but their threads are
all stripped. :(

Don,
You might try Dan's Small Parts web site at
http://www.danssmallpartsandkits.net/

I think this is a one-man garage operation, but he has lots of unusual and hard
to find items. The 1/4" nuts are at
http://www.danscloseoutsandspecialdeals.com/oddsandendsno2.html
1/4 SWITCH NUTS PRICE..BAG OF 100 FOR $1.50
Looks like he has a special deal on them right now, but he forgot to list the
price LOL

His site is not professional at all, but it has a ton of stuff on it if you're
willing to scroll and read. Great prices on almost everything he has listed.

Cheers!!!

Many thanks for this lead.

It is astounding that this seems to be the only sane source for this
product.

His cuneiform-on-clay-tablet terms are quaint to say the least.

Try calling Mouser, and if that does not "fit", then for 5K and up
(the more the better) try Alloy Products, PO Box 3496, Laguna Hills CA
92654 (800) 714-0268; Anthony Grunauer.
This info was current as of Mar 2003.
It might be useful to have as detailed info as possible esp part make
and number availble.

Have you tried Federal Screw Products or others that supply electronic

The Great Attractor

Local hardware is pretty much limited to 1/4-20 and rarely 1/4-28.

Zero hardware store demand for 1/4-40.

What is the size for SMA?

If it matches, you could likely buy just the retaining nuts for/from SMA
male to male pass thrus.

knowledgeable and will go the extra mile to source whatever you want.

The gold plate and premium connector companies are certain to make the
cost outrageous.

Not all SMA are gold plated. Just the opposite, actually. Plenty of
strong steel versions, especially pass through male to male types.

1/4-36 is hard to thread onto a 1/4-40 anyway.

Which is why my initial post mentioned finding out what the threading
is, nut boy.

Instead of being a peanut gallery comment Tard, you could try reading
all the posts in a thread. This one was at less than 30 last time I
checked.

You really are thick aren't you. You posted indicating you didn't
know the thread pitch of an SMA. I helpfully post what it is and
somehow you have a problem with this. Now tell me, why would I want
to bother reading your posts?
