Solenoid... What power supply?

I want to use a solenoid to propel a small, very light block up a guide rod with enough force to ring a bell. I'm not sure of the exact weight of the block or the length of the guide rod, etc, but I thought a 9V or 12V battery would be best.
I would, of course, be using a relay to keep the large voltage away from the PICaxe chip

Your power supply, is going to depend on the parameters of whatever solenoid you select.
