Solder reflow

Goodday to all. Will doing a solder reflow with a heatgun or toaster oven fix circuit board problems? also, what are the do's and don't of using this technique. Your responses will be very much appreciated. thank you

Hi there

in general I wouldn't trust it .... you are trying to fix dry joints by reflowing existing solder that there is no flux left in it
all you will get is another remelted dry joint

ok. So if I was to do a reflow on a BGA chip on a TV i am working on, it would just temporarly fix the problem? I don't want to throw away a board because of just one chip that simply lost contact with the traces. What do I do then? :(

Your best bet is a hot air/solder station. A dedicated machine for this purpose.
The trick is to remove the component, apply solder paste and apply heat again.
I say a dedicated machine because people do use hot air guns that also release all the surrounding components too. Not a desired scenario for the best of engineers.
They can be bought for as little as $50. on Ebay. But cheap does mean just that!!
