What is this "burnt?" area that I've circled in the above photo?

What is this "burnt?" area that I've circled in the above photo?

It's a 'burned area'......

Come on! How are we supposed to know? What's 'in' the hole? What's on the other side of the hole? Is it a 'real' hole or something someone made? How about a close up picture of it (both sides?).

Looks like dirt as in the right hand side bottom corner.
Burnt as an adjective is acceptable in most cases.
