Protection diode on latching relays

I am wanting to protect my control circuit from any voltage spike that might be caused from switching a coil relay. I am using a GE RR-7 latching relays. I have read that a diode can help drain off residual current from the coil. Since this is a latching relay with an ON and and OFF lead, will I need to use 2 diodes or can this be accomplished with one. Also what would a recommended diode size be for this? It will be 24V dc tripping the relay.

place a diode between each of the on and off leads and the common. The anode should be towards the most negative end when the switching signal is applied. The door need not be reassured for more current than the relay coil requires asked should have a voltage rating more than the supply voltage. In your case a 1N4001 should be more than sufficient.
