OT rant, iphone

My point exactly. I couldn't be bothered with any sort of smart phone to
be honest. All I want to do is make and receive calls, do the odd sms
and I use the calendar and alarm facility. Inbuilt GPS would be nice but
not mandatory since I have a TomTom for use in the car and when I'm not
in the car, I don't need one.

I'm much the same but there are a few features on the Desire I use often
such as weather radar mapping, scientific calculator and metric
conversion programs, and of course the camera which really is excellent.

I've also modified mine to change the way it does a few things, and
removed a lot of the pre-packaged crap that I'm unlikely to ever need
like Twitter and Facebook apps.
A large amount of my friends have iPhones and I don't hear them
complaining about the lack of features or apps. They don't complain
about the OS, they just use the phone as they want.

As I said, if it floats their boat then good on them. All I'm saying is
that there are alternatives out there.
If the iPhone doesn't give you the jollies, then move on and buy
something that does.

Did that long ago.
No point in a "mine is bigger than yours" debate on
usenet because, at the end of the day, no opinions are likely to be
changed.
Indeed.

My biggest issue with smartphones is their physical size. Back when cell
phones became ubiquitous, they were quite bulky. Since then they have
shrunk down to a nice pocketable size. The era of the smartphone seems
to be reversing all that as manufacturers try to make the phone into
something more resembling a tablet. You know it's getting ridiculous
when you can get shoulder strap mounts for the smartphone. Maybe it's
because people feel the urge to let the world see their phone on their
upper arm. Is it a statement they are trying to make? Or is it that they
are just getting to big to conveniently fit in pockets?

I find the Desire to be okay size wise, but then it's not all that much
bigger than the Nokia N8 it replaced. Still, my first mobile phone was
an early 80's analogue pre "brick" Motorola car phone with a handpiece
that was tethered to a car sized battery, so everything today seems
small by comparison.
My 6300 Nokia isn't the best phone around but it is a convenient size
and it doesn't dominate my life. The same cannot be said of so many
smartphone users.

Agreed.

Much as I admire the features, performance and ability of the desire
it's primary function to me is being a phone, and it gets used on that
basis. I have no games on it, I don't use it as a multi-media system,
and I'd be *very* lucky if I used more than 10% of my monthly 1GB data
allowance.

Interesting. I drive a Toyota. What I pay extra up front for the "Toyota
badge", I invariable get back when I trade it in after several years.
Whilst in my possession, the Toyota will be reliable and won't give me
grief. To counter your point, I have tried the alternatives and I do
know my choice of a Toyota is the right choice for me. Sure, my Toyota
hasn't the pizzaz of a Porsche, the style of a Benz or BMW or the luxury
of a Rolls Royce but it does what I ask of it. I don't use it to stroke
my ego, I use it to reliably get me from A to B and back again. That's
what it was designed for and it does that admirably.

No argument here.

Toyota are world famous for making reliable vehicles (with a few recent
exceptions) and deservedly so. Where they're not so great in my opinion
is in the area of giving people value for money. They rely far too much
on the value of their name to make sales rather than offering features
that make the product look like a worthwhile purchase compared to those
offered by their competitors.

Can't blame them for that though, as they're in a pretty enviable
position and I don't expect there'd be too many companies that would be
any different if they found themselves in a similar situation, but the
old saying of "Today's technology tomorrow" is certainly true of most
things Toyota sell.
I suspect the same applies to the iPhones.

To a degree, but I expect a fair bit of it is the wank value of having
the "latest thing". I mean, you don't usually see too many people
camping all night outside a Toyota dealership to be first in line to own
a new Corolla.
I don't have any iPhones but I do have a 9 year old G3 iMac and a 6 year
old G5 Dual processor Powermac. If the build quality of the iPhone is to
the same standard as the build quality of my Macs, then I'd have no
hesitation paying the premium. Right now I just simply don't need all
the extra features the iPhone offers or any smart phone for that matter.

Fair enough.

As I said I simply don't get excited about who's name appears on the
equipment I use and unless a company is going to put something in my
bank account I'm not going to buy their product *just* on the strength
of their name. I generally look at what's available and buy what I like
regardless of who makes it, and that could be the most or least
expensive depending on how I see it.

Which is probably the reason why I'd have no qualms in buying a Hyundai
or Kia over a Honda or Toyota.

If I were to consider a smartphone, Android would be my choice. The
iPhone would rank well above a Windoze phone however. The Windows phone
would be behind even the dumbphones.

I'm not a fan of them myself, but I don't know if I'd go *that* far.

I've got a HTC Desire and it's outstanding. Piss easy to use, reliable,
and there are *heaps* of mods & support for the things on the net. The
wife has a HTC Mozart which is a Windows 7 based phone, and while it's
different to the Desire and I'm not particularly fond of it, they *both*
shit on the latest Iphone that a friend staying with us this week
currently has.
=========================================================
That surprises me. I had the iPhone 4s on order but the delay meant I had to
go elsewhere. I was going to take the HTC as well but then found out it
wasn't a "Blue Tick" phone, something you need in Regional Qld destinations.

explain this bluetick thingy pls
It certifies that Telstra has tested the phone and reckon that it is
suitable for use in low signal strength areas.

According to Telstra, to get the blue tick, the phone must be capable of
having an external aerial connected.
Don't shoot the messenger!

Got given a 3g 4.2 iPhone,what a useless contraption,Frustrating waste
of time, what use are they?
First of all I do not want music, which seems to be their prime purpose.
I have no intention of ever buying anything from iTunes and it took me
an hour to figure how to get free apps as in the beginning it seemed
that nothing was going to happen until I gave my credit card details,
which I have no intention of.I discovered finally that it could be done.
I tried to download a free eBook reader app nothing happened at least no
indication of anything happening. So I decided to download it to computer
with iTunes, I then synched with phone but got nowhere (did not transfer
to phone)
tried to figure out how to put my own MP3 in phone to use as ring
tone,got nowhere.
Maybe when I get to other house with Wi Fi something might happen.
Almost got the hammer out.
Did manage to put some photos from computer to phone
I have an HTC diamond touch which I have some control over.
Without music being a major interest and a bank account the iPhone seems
a dead loss.
I might see if Wi Fi allows me to download some apps.

Strange you are having so much hassle - my 8 yr old grandkid manages to
download apps and music to her iPod and my iPhone without problems. I
guess you could hire her as a consultant to teach you how to do that
sort of thing if the money was right.

The reality is that kids of your granddaughter's generation are whom the
iGizmos are aimed at - impressionable young things who think along the lines
of social media and shopping centres, who aren't burdoned with old-fashioned
business logic.

My daughter has an iPhone, which she (in her own words) "loves to hate." My
sons and I all have Androids and wouldn't touch an iThingy with anything
other than a mallet.

There're plenty of work-arounds available online to get around the
limitations Apple has imposed on the iPhone, but alas most of them involve
"jailbreaking" the device - which, because of Apple's licencing model (you
purchase the right to use it; you don't actually purchase the physical
product itself), means your warranty will be permanently revoked.

I don't get this but have heard it before.
The apple phones are simple phones for simple people.

The support should one die is unfuckingbelievable.

I got my new mobile in under ten minutes.
Backup and restore between old and new device was simple.

Back to the jailbreak option.
It is like buying a car, souping it up, blowing the engine and expecting it
to be covered under a great warrantee..... Life has never worked like that.
Also you will find many devices will lock up in the future should third
party software be installed or unauthorised modifications be done.
I think the latest Nintendo product will brick itself if it detects
problems during upgrades.
