Mini hi-fi Sony FH-B411 cd player won't play music, but tray works perfectly

I think the answer might be " Throw it out. Buy a new one. ", but I'll askanyway.

I have a Sony " Mini HiFi Component System " model FH-B411. The cd player won't play music.
The cd tray opens and closes with no problem, but when you put on a music cd and then you close the tray it doesn't sound as if it spins the cd and therefore doesn't read it. Of course I tried with different cds but same result. The rest of the mini component system works perfectly.

I haven't opened it because I want to know what should I'd be looking for, what is the "broken" part to fix. Also, I don't want to make it worse. Using the video option with an auxiliary cable cord I hook up my ipod or my portable cd player (I know very old) and has great sound. This one has wooden speaker boxes and sounds a lot better than any new ones I've listened to.

I really would like to finally fix the cd player of the mini component system.

I don't know if maybe I just open it and vacuum the dust it can be fixed, any ideas??
Does anyone out there know what could be done???

Thanks for any help,
Paula

Take care of the easy things first like the above posts suggest. If the CD does not spin at all there may be another issue.
Is there a display on the device that flashes when it attempts to read a CD?

Yeah, either way, you're going to have to open the unit.
It might be as simple as a switch that closes when the CD tray closes, and tells the player to start 'spinning' to read the disc.
If you open the case and observe what happens when you insert a CD, it might point you in the right direction to find the problem.

Check the ribbon cables going to/from the CD transport to the main boards, and also the ribbon cable connecting the optical assembly. These can get oxidation on them, leading to flaky connections. I've seen this on some Sony consumer gear and cleaning/reseating them usually fixes the problem. :)
