Insight on Sanyo PLC-XP30 problem

Good Day,

1st time here and also a noob. I recently got a Sanyo PLC-XP30 and was told that I just needed a bulb. So I got a bulb but the problem still persist.

The Problem

2 seconds after I turn on the projector, the system and light comes on and whole system shuts off and the LAMP Indicator light turns on red solid. I looked at the manual and this indicator implies it is in Stand by mode.

Solutions I have tried after reading the service manual

1. Tested the fuse. Seems ok - Used a new one just to make sure.
2. Pressed the reset switch - Does the same thing. Turns on then shuts down.
3. Pressed the Thermal Reset Switch. - (Not familiar with these. Not sure if its broken. I am thinking of replacing this)
4. Dismantled the whole unit and cleaned it up. (very dusty)

Question(s)

1. What could cause the unit to shutdown?
2. What else should I check?

Thank you very much.

Tom

Hello mrtomjerry.
Welcome from me.
The problem could be a number of things, short circuit some where, or current over loading the unit, problems on the psu pcb board, you could test the thermal switch with a continuity tester on a meter, power off first, shut downs like that surgest overload or short in there.

Have a good close look at all the components, i know its a pain opening it up again, but thats the only way to fault find.

Some times you might find the fault immediately other times no matter how hard you try you just draw a blank.

All is not lost yet, test the thermal reset switch, and have a good close visual inspection of all the components, and the underside of the pcb if you can get to it.
Dave. :)
PS, post some pictures of the pcb both sides if possible, sharp images if you can.

Hey Tom,
welcome to the forums

Now you may or may not be aware that the majority of ptojectors have lamp timers
If the timer has reached its max time ~ 2000 Hrs ( depending on the make and model)
then it will do as you say.
So when the lamp is replaced the timer needs to be reset to 0000. Now with some projectors any "joe bloggs" can do the timer reset. BUT and this is a big BUT --- many projectors need to go to an authorised service centre as the tech there knows the access code to get into that section of the menu.
So for you, there may be no choice as it may have already gone into shut down mode and the only way to get the timer reset is to take it to a service centre.

For any other failure, its doubtful that you will be able to repair it anyway. They are a pretty complex beast ( I used to work on them several years ago) and parts are going to be difficult to get for the same reason as above. ONLY authorised service centres will be supplied with spare parts.

Good Luck :)

Ok lets try this.
I totally agree with davenn on this occasion, a service centre would be the way to go mrtomjerry, as the unit is complex and there may be lamp life reset codes to take in to account.
May i take this opertunity to first applogies to mrtomjerry for the corruption on his thread, and secondly an apology to davenn, so sorry to you both.
Dave.D :)
PS, life's to short to argue
Please leave this post, its in good faith, thank you moderators.

Hello there and kind welcomes to the forum,

I completely agree with Both Dave's on this one, going to a service center to have them reset the lamp timer sounds like an excellent idea. I have found after doing a bit of Googling, that you can reset the life timer yourself, however some of the symptoms DO NOT necessarily match.

This information was on page 40 of the users manual, I am unable to paste it verbatim here without manually typing it, which is a bit of work.

The unit i replaced the lamp on was not an up to date unit, more an old second hand projector i acquired was in my early black and white film developing days of my photography hobby, the only conditions to follow then was dont touch the lamp with bare fingers, as this would cause heat spots in operation and ruin the lamp, but that was more than 20 years ago, my projector was from the early 1970's anyway all the best with getting the unit up and running again.

I think its still recommended to not touch the lamp... for the same reasons as that would defiantly kill the lamp a little prematurely (uneven heating across the bulb surface).

Thank you all for the reply and apologies for my late reply. Service Center will cost me $95.00 to diagnose it.
I got the unit for $20 and invested on a new lamp for $100. So at this point is it really worth it to get this fixed?

I think electronically this unit is OK. At this point I am concluding that the timer needs to be reset. I can't find any manual way to do this.

There is this in the manual

NOTE :
CAUTION TO REPLACE ASS'Y MAIN AND EEP-ROMS (IC806/ 808).

Eep-Roms(IC806/ 808) memorizes the data adjusted at Service Mode, and should not be replaced except for the case of defective product.

The Uneven Color Correction data is memorized in IC808.

Lamp Illumination Time, Data No. 60 of Service Mode, is memorized in IC806 to indicate the span of Lamp Life. When IC806 is replaced, Lamp Illumination Time is reset at the same time.

Lamp Illumination Time can not be set to the previous value.

CAUTION TO REPLACE ASS'Y MAIN. (In the case Eep-Roms are not damaged.) When Ass'y Main is replaced, Eep-Roms on new Ass'y Main should be replaced with the those on previous Ass'y Main. ❏

LAMP ILLUMINATION TIME keep the value as before. ❏

"Uneven Color Correction" and "Other Electrical Adjustments" are unnecessary.

CAUTION TO REPLACE IC808. (In the case IC808 is damaged.)

When IC is replaced with new one, CPU write in initial data in IC808. Initial data is not the same data as factory initial data. After replacing the IC808, readjust the "Uneven Color Correction."

CAUTION TO REPLACE IC806. (In the case IC806 is damaged.)

When IC is replaced with new one, CPU write in initial data in IC806. Initial data is not the same data as factory initial data. After replacing the IC806, readjust the "Electrical Adjustments". ❏ LAMP ILLUMINATION TIME is reset to the initial value.

IC808 = 409 339 3605(part no.) IC 24LC16BT/SN-T
IC806 = 409 339 3605(part no.) IC 24LC16BT/SN-T

How strange that this Eiki has almost the same service manual as this sanyo.

Well this is will be on hold till I learn more about electornics.

Thank you all for the reply and if I manage to manually reset it. I will post it here.

That is really up to you ... if you are going to get lots of use out of it, then its a very cheap price to pay considering the cost of a new one

The $95 diag. cost will be part of the overall cost if you go ahead with the repair
depending on you financial situation, $95 may well worth the spend to get an actual cost of repair quote. It may only be another $100 on top of that to have it fully working projector

cheers

Similar issue - simple fix

I have the same projector which had a similar problem. It started acting up, and got so bad that about 2 seconds after start-up would shut off immediately and not come back. After taking the whole thing apart and cleaning it, which it badly needed anyway, I came upon a simple solution:

Hard reset.

I didn't think of it until I read mrtomjerry's comment about the lamp life being stored in on board memory (duh, I know). But I figured I'd give it a try, and sure enough. A few seconds holding the power button while the unit is unplugged reset the internal clocks and memory. Runs like a dream now.

Good Day:
Hi. I have the Sanyo PLC-XP30 Projector and it has the following failure:

1. When the power switch is "ON", the Lamp Led is red and the Ready Led is green. All the fans are ON.
2. When push the Button (ON), the LAMP LED dim, the READY LED is green, and the LAMP REPLACE LED become red.
3. The lamp light for a second and the projector go "OFF".
4. I must wait a minutes for repeat the procedure.

I check al the voltages and all are OK. But the Power-Fail signal on pin 4 of K8D conector is 2 VCC when push the ON Button. The Fan signal is OK. And the ballast (i have 2) i think that is OK.

Please have you any idea?
Thanks
Best regards.

Hi, Dave.
I changed the lamp and ballast with new ones. The problem remains the same. The appearance of the main power supply and the secondary power supply are good. Voltages are correct. PwFail signal is 2 VDC for a few seconds when you press the button. I read in a forum that has to do a "hard reset", but not how to do it without the screen on. Can you help?. thanks

a lot of projectors require you to reset the "lamp Hours Timer"
else even with a new globe it still wont work

Thanks Dave for your answer. I think you're right. But on screen I can not reset the lamp timer. In two seconds the projector turns off. Maybe I should do it directly on the EEPROM IC806 (24LC16BT/SN-T), or change the IC?. A forum user wrote about a symptom like this, in the same projector:
"Hard reset.

What do you think about this?. I do not understand as it has done ...
Thanks again. Best regards.
