Infra-red break beam matrix sending MIDI

Hi all,


I wish to create a matrix of infra-red break beams which, if a beam is broken, sends a MIDI signal to a computer to trigger and event in say, Ableton Live.

I have seen many systems involving modulation by way of a nearer-farther infra-red sensor but none featuring break beam systems. Do we reckon this is possible and if so, where would I begin?

Any help would be much appreciated
