I would like help with Linear power supply unit design calculation

I am a novice in Electronics though I have a background of electrical and communication engineering training. I would like some one to guide me as a five year old in linear power design as well as switch mode power supply to start with buck converters.

My first project is to design and implement 6V20W power supply unit to light a microscope lamp.

1. What is ripple voltage
2. Transformer sizing: what transformer parameters are needed to give a constant DC output of 6V20W
3. Supply the formulas and their application in the power design.
4. Is the use of an inductor in linear power supply appropriate and if so where and when.
5. Enlighten me on where to obtain free PDF materials on the basics of power supply design. Materials that come in hand for some one with no previous design knowledge.

I'll appreciate a lot any possible assistance to achieve cited objectives.
