My daughter (Phoenix Water labs Manager) says he set the car's cruise
control before climbing out, so it was likely suicide.

So it was ruled. But if a person's ability to fully understand
the consequences of what he's doing is degraded by neurological
damage from a parasite, should that be called intentional suicide,
rather than a sad accident? No doubt his life insurance company
will seize on the suicide ruling. Very sad for the family.

mental unbalance.

Depends on when the policy was issued. Most have 2 year limits, after
which suicide is covered.

U.S. 468 , 1893 from CONNECTICUT MUT. LIFE INS. CO. OF HARTFORD
v. AKENS.No. 100.December 4, 1893 ( I think ...)

I didn't know of this case law, but I'm not in the least surprised,
given the well-documented mental deterioration.

I didn't know of this case law, but I'm not in the least surprised,
given the well-documented mental deterioration.

The insurance companies have been taking a beating in favor of the
insured for the past thirty years- but I suppose if they put a clause in
the policy that expressly excludes self-destruction due to mental
illness or diminished capacity or similar then they are off the hook.
The main point here is that, under the law, this is not a suicide.

What worries me is that kept his job as PHX CFO while "debilitated".
WTF?

I formed the impression that the deterioration was rapid. A colleague of
mine began to break down through unsupportable stress over several
weeks, and we didn't notice anything significant before he flipped
entirely. But thankfully, he recovered.
