Subdivision Gate Opener Project Tips/Advice?

I'm hoping to create a simple transmitter that I can use to open a gate that blocks off a back (and more convenient) entrance to a friend's subdivision, as a project. To my knowledge it is opened by a little radio transmitter, like what you use in your car to open your garage door. I figure I'd first have to find out what frequency the transmitter uses, and then find out if it fires bursts of the signal or in a certain pattern or just a steady, one time transmission, if I'm saying that right. I don't know too much about radio transmitters so I'm just hoping for some advice about the best way of finding the operating frequency and pattern, and the best route to replicating them with my own device, which I would either have to build or buy. Note: I do have access to/can borrow temporarily the transmitter that my friend & their family use to open the gate.
Thanks
Edit: Basically also besides advice, I'm trying to figure out how to find what frequency and the pattern, if any, that his remote uses, so I can replicate it.
Thanks again

Hi Welcome :)

you don't really want to use a transmitter that is designed to open something else also opening your gate
start with a fresh system ... then all you have to worry about is the interfacing between the receiver module and the gate motor drive system
The net/eBay is full of transmitter / receiver modules for this purpose ... do some searching

By the note I meant I can borrow his remote that works with the gate, to analyze it, so that might make it easier to replicate (maybe find the frequency it uses, etc). I'm trying to basically duplicate his remote, so once I get what frequency it emits, and the pattern if any, I can go about trying to find a product that will be able to duplicate those. But yes, point taken, once I know what I need to get, I can search for a suitable transmitter.

but you don't want his remote operating 2 different things do you ?

I would assume not
you don't have to plat with his remote
as I said, you can buy TX/RX modules. they are easy to setup, you don't have to worry about frequencies etc
its all taken care of ... again, all you have to worry about is the interfacing between the receiver module and the gate motor drive system

The path you are trying to take is not needed ... its a waste of time and energy

Dave, could it be that there is a slight misunderstanding?
I interpret the question as follows: The friend has a remotely operated gate but only one transmitter. The op wants to replicate a functionally equivalent transmitter so he can open the gate, too. That would be two transmitters to control one receiver, not one transmitter for two receivers.

The easiest way would be to buy a second transmitter. However, building your own transmitter is a nice project.

I don't know, Harald his opening line in the OP says the opposite to what he says in the first sentence of his second post (post#3)

its all very confusing ???????

I don't know, Harald his opening line in the OP says the opposite to what he says in the first sentence of his second post (post#3)
Where? The opening line states:
I'm hoping to create a simple transmitter that I can use to open a gate that blocks off a back (and more convenient) entrance to a friend's subdivision, as a project.
In post #3 he says:
I can borrow his remote that works with the gate, to analyze it, ... I'm trying to basically duplicate his remote
I don't see a contradiction. Let's wait for the op to clarify matters, shall we? (What other chance do we have anyway :D )
