I use an old Weller 100/140 gun for soldering big wire to speakers. 12ga isn't that big, though. I'm sure your iron will do it, if you are patient. You can find an old Weller gun at a garage sale for $5. It's useless for circuit boards but ideal for heavy jobs like big speaker wires.
