Using a computer monitor as a tv?

Hi,

I need some help/advice on whether it is possible to use a computer monitor as a T.V? I’m not a very techy person and have only heard of this being a possibility from a few friends.

I'm looking to buy a computer monitor instead of a T.V as they are almost half the price for what seems exactly the same quality, only there isn’t a controller (which I can deal with).

I wonder if this is at all a good idea and if it’s possible to actually connect the monitor to a free view box?

If so, what monitor would you recommend? I would be looking for a 22-26 inch size screen that has a good quality picture.

Any help will be much appreciated. Many Thanks,

Ricky

Hi Ricky,

I'd recommend buying a TV over a monitor if you are intending to use it as a TV, as there are features there you'd miss out on which would cause problems - such as speakers, remote control and the need for a freeview box that meets the monitor input requirements.

It is technically possible, but you'd need to have a freeview box and monitor with VGA/DVI/HDMI connections. Then you'd need to sort out the audio side of things.

I'm guessing you're from the UK by using the word freeview? If so, you can pick up a 22" LCD TV for only slightly more than an LCD monitor (for example, this LG one at £179). Even highstreet names will do decent TV's for a little more than this (Samsung 22" for £189).

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your quick reply! I forgot to mention I have already got a sound system that can be connected :) and I have a freeview box which has a controller for it anyway (you are right in saying I’m from the U.K btw). All I really need is the screen tbh.

I will look around for a monitor with VGA/DVI/HDMI connections, as you said. Is this all I need from a monitor or are there any specifics in the screen requirements?

I will also consider actually buying a T.V as those prices you quoted are darn good!

Many thanks again,

Ricky
