Zero. I pulled the noisy drives, swaddled them in bubble-wrap, and
jammed them back into the bays. Hard drives don't need cooling, do
they?

I've got an unused fireplace, I'm going to put 1 or 2 computers in it,
seal it off to get rid of that "office" enviroment noise.

At my age I don't hear fan noise, and there are three computers at my
feet and a laptop on the desk ;-)

I was So Glad when I got old enough not to hear the scream from
unsynced TV monitors in studios. But I was on the beach campsite a
couple of months ago and could hear a piezo igniter clicking 25m away,
cos the fridge had run out of butane. Thats the problem being an ex
sound maintainence engineer, you listen for the noise, and not the
music. Think its called "professional deformation"

That will come in handy if the computers ever catch fire...

Seriously, though, how will you stop dirt from entering at the top?
The damper has big gaps around it. Perhaps one of those spark
arrester caps will help.

I used to walk down our street at night in the summer. With windows
open I could hear the 15khz come screaming out of the houses.

At the end of my tour in Korea, they did a medical check including a
hearing test in a booth. It seemed like I was in there a long time.
When I was told to come out, the tech guy said my hearing was completely
off the chart except for one tone range in one ear where the machine
could measure it. He was hoping for a 'perfect' score and said in 10
months of doing this all day, I had the best hearing.

I doubt that its that good any more.

I ran my last PC for years with a hard disk sitting on a plastic drink
glass outside the case close enough that the power and data cables could reach.
I don't think I ever had a PC with the cover attached.

I've always assumed that US 'duct tape' is what we call 'Gaffer tape' here in
the UK.

Hard wearing stuff with an awesome adhesive and a PVC coating ?

The UK name originates from the use of an 'old gaffer' on most film sets to
'fix things up' - usually involving tape.

Gaffer..

1. An electrician in charge of lighting on a movie or television set.
2. Chiefly British. An old man or a rustic.
3. Chiefly British. A boss or foreman.

In my live sound days I always bought the most esoteric colours possible since
it was then unlikely that the band we were providing sound for would claim
ownership of the roll in event of contest !

They come with the case kit.

Normally 4 unless it's a quick swap, in which case zero - friction
normally does the job. Oh - and I have some in front of me lying on the
desktop that have been around for a while entirely outside the case on a
long ribbon from a 'test PC'. Makes it easier to swap them around. ;-)

Screws?? WTF are they? My hard drive are usually hanging from the
cables, occasionally I prop them up on the place where they are
supposed to go, usually PCB side down...

I don't like the idea of 4 screws. It seems that having 4 screws
opens the possibility of applying a bending/warping force to the
frame of the drive. I use 2 screws; left-rear and right-front or
left-front and right-rear.
