Troubleshooting help on Viewsonic P815 GV3 screen went black

C

Chris

Hello everyone,
I have had my Viewsonic P815 for 5 years now and I have been just damn
happy with it. I noticed about a month ago that the side edges of the
screen would seem to get wavy and even sometimes the screen width would
be narrower then usual. Then not long after that, the whole screen
started to flicker like it was being shut off, and at the same time
right when it flickers like that you could hear a crisp "snap" sound
coming from the back, almost just like a spark plug does. Then the
flickering and snaping became more frequent. Tonight when I turned it on
all I heard was about 15 or 20 quick snap sounds and the screen never
came on. The power led is green however, so it isn't in standby mode.
And I can see the coil on the crt glowing.
I don't feel any static on the crt face.
I was thinking maybe the flyback finally died but I was hoping with my
description someone could help me confirm.
Thanks a ton.
Chris

Clean everthing up with alcohol and reconnect. If it still fails then look
at it in the dark for arcing. I believe you have a bad flyback. Find the
the part number on the flyback (TLVA90000 or something like that). Then do a
google search on that part number for failure info.

I think the FBT Part Number is: ETF40L48AZ /AZ1

I have been trying to get a whole of it for a while now - so Far nothing. If
you want me to let you know when I come up with something, register on my

Man theres quite a bit to disassembly to these units.
I already removed the board that the flyback is soldered to and I'm
wondering if I should just replace it anyway even after cleaning stuff up.
The number is TLFA00965 on the flyback. Theres a few questionable solder
joints on other circuit boards i'm planning to reflow also.
What do you mean by failure info?
Thanks.

I can clearly read the sticker saying TLFA00965 and my chassis is a GV3
Hope that helps you too.

I' ve been reading that I might have to have some Viewsonic software to
adjust the focus after replacing the flyback? Is this pretty likely?

Well, that One I may be able to Get. I guess the one I mentioned is to the
/HV12S Chassis.

Still you can make a post to my board, and when I know Price & Avail, I will
respond there.

If I can find an answer to the DAS question, I will post it there too.

Hey it's Chris again from my folks' pc.

Everything's back together and I powered it up and it's no different
then when I got into it which is i suppose a plus since it's no worse!
Anyway I have no static at the crt screen at all and I do have coils
glowing in the crt neck.
I suppose i could install a new flyback but i'm not totally sure that's
the problem. Is there a quick way to check them that doesn't require an
oscilloscope?

Do a google search (newsgroups) on the Flyback part number. You may find
similar problems related to that flyback. There was one or two models that
had problems with a flyback.
