total newbie greenhorn needs some expert advice

howy everybody, where do i start. i have 2 sony amps (strdb940/870). both have no sound, everything else seems to be working, all lite up and no blown fuses. wot i need is somboby or everybody for that matter to explain in great but simple terms how to go about fault finding, wot tools i need. i am more than willing to go throigh every little piece bit by bit to find and fix. please be gentle and not to much tech speak. i want to learn. thanks.

I wouldn't say Sony's surround receivers are very suited for beginners..
In my experience they can get strange faults in their audio processors that are hard to find and understand even for experienced people. I don't like'em..
You'd need at least a service manual and an oscilloscope, maybe a signal generator.
Google for "str-db940" and "str-db870". Maybe you're lucky and find a service manual or some tips.
