To Graham And Others: Ionization Or Photeoelectric For Residence Smoke Detectors ?

Much, much thanks for all the info; have really learned a lot.
Will definitely Not consider an X10 system anymore.

a. Have a feeling that this has been discussed, and probably debated,
numerous times,
but what is best for a residence; the photoelectric or ionization type of
smoke detector ?

Why ?

Different types for different locations ?

b. With the Ademco system(s) you mentioned, they "apparently" do not have
the
ionization wireless type. Is this true, or did I just miss it ?
Any other ionization mfg.that would mesh with this panel ?

c. Couldn't find any, but does anyone offer a CO detector that's wireless
also, that would work with this
panel you recommended ?

d. Just to have a choice, who would be your second choice for a panel (and
detectors) after the Ademco one ?

Am willing to put the time and expense into structuring a really decent
system, so am
very thankful for your's and everyone's help in how to do it, and avoiding
"mistakes".

You want photoelectric smokes. It has been VERY recently discussed, read
Michael Baker's response:

"Ionization style smoke detectors are more responsive to smaller, electrically
charged particles present near flaming fires.

Photoelectric spot-type smoke detectors are more responsive to the larger,
lighter colored particles of smoldering fires."

You do not need, nor desire ION's in the house, trust me. You may however want
heat detectors in the kitchen and attic (and HVAC closets).


I am not aware of wireless CO2 detectors manufactured by any company. Should
you need them, the panel you choose will support hard-wired ones. Maybe someone
else will chime in with that information.

I can't answer the "second choice" question unless you have provided specific
needs. I recommended the Ademco one because it's easy to program, relatively
cheap, the parts are readily available, and you should have no trouble finding a
alarm company to take it over should you need monitoring.

Here is a question:

You are going to have to hardwired the keypads, power, sirens... Do you think
you can do that?

CO detectors will work on any panel...they're not panel specific.

They also cover a large area so you may only need one, so wiring it may not be a problem. I dunno of any wireless ones.. but you could always power one locally (near the device) and put a supervised wireless transmitter in the wall behind it. I've done this with heat detectors (no power needed) and some other devices as well.
