Tigger toy 1 of 3

Greetings,

I will be posting a series of 3 threads for this particular issue. We have this toy and when you hit the on button all three characters are supposed to dance. Well, recently Tigger stopped participating and i have been able to narrow it down to the board itself. In this first post i will post a picture of the toy and follow the next two post with components.

Thank you,

Dmitry

Tigger 2 of 3

Here i wanted to point out the white wires on the left or closer to my thumb, they are the ones that lead to Tigger.

How i narrowed it down

I used a 9 volt battery and checked the motor with it. I presume that it comes down to the board if the motor is fine. I don't have a volt meter to diagnose thoroughly and I suspect I will need it to go further with the fix.

Thanks

Start by buying a DMM and get familiar with it.Trying to fix something like this without one is like randomly driving down streets in your city looking for one specific restaurant to eat at, sure you might get there, but it would have been much easier if you had the right tools to start with.

Well, I won't venture a guess as to what's wrong, but I will make you an offer. I'll send you some free parts. Anything I have in my spare parts box that I can identify on your cards, I'll send. For example, I see your card seems to have a few 47uF electrolitic capacitors. I have hundreds, so you can have as many as you need. I can't identify the resistors you have there, but if I have any that you need, you're welcome to them. No charge for any of it.

You do have a soldering iron... right?

Sir,

That's wonderful and much appreciated. I have a soldering iron and solder, and that pretty much sums up my setup at the moment. Someone did suggest I look into a DMM so ill be shopping around for a used one in the next week. Thank you, dmitry.

Suggestions for DMM?

Well there's the obvious choice of Fluke, you can usually get decent used ones pretty cheap.

If you lived in Canada I could suggest specific Mastercraft DMMs that I like, other than that, don't look at anything too cheap. The cheap ones usually don't have great protection in them.

I have this one as well: http://www.abra-electronics.com/products/DM%2d9700-Digital-Multimeter.html

It came as part of my first year electronics kit from college. It seems to be pretty decent. I still prefer my Fluke for most things though.

Okay, just drop me an email at tryppyr (at) comcast.net and let me know where to ship them. If you can make out what resistors you have on the board by translating the color bands into numbers using this link, add those to the email as well and I'll add the ones I have to the package.
