Telstra Touchfone 200R - disable keypad

Does anyone know how to disable the keypad on this type of telephone?
Simply unplugging the keypad stops the phone working completely.

I want to disable the keypad but still be able to talk on the phone.

Sorry to be vague as it's been a while, but there was a link position on a
previous incarnation of the 200 which when inserted acted as a disable or
lock. It may still be shown on the PCB silk-screen.

Thanks Ken, but I took the phone apart the other day and there didn't
seem to be any markings on the PCB (looks like a phenolic or paper
PCB). I will have to have another look. From memory there is a link
position (un-populated) next to the keypad connector, maybe that is
the one?

The hearing impaired version of the Touchfone uses an Oki MSM6352
"Built-in DTMF Generator 4-Bit Microcontroller". If yours has the same
IC, then I suspect you could disable pulse and tone dialling by
lifting the DP OUT and DTMF OUT pins. I don't know how to disable the
keypad altogether, though.

Yes, that's the one. We put in a key-switch so people could lock their phone
(this was in a village on one of the Pacific islands).

Regardless of the link - its possible someone could still dial out by
using one of those acoustic hand-held DTMF tone generators (that were
used with rotary dial phones to let people use services like
electronic banking and such) to dial the number

I recall you could get such programs for pocket PC and such that would
output a number from the address book as DTMF tones from the speaker
to directly dial the number without having to press any keys on the
phone.

for that matter - you could dial out by quickly pushing the hook
switch with the right number of presses to simulate dialling a number
with a rotary phone, so dialling out might still be possible this way.

be careful of anyone pulling either of these stunts on your phone if
you are trying to avoid people using it to make calls - and the phone
isnt supervised.




also be aware that if you kill the keyboard - it wont be possible to
dial "000" which might land you in hot water legally if someone dies
etc as a result.

Thanks for the follow up Ken.

The reason for wanting it is for an old lady in a "cared for" hostel
who is now having problems dialling or eaven using the stored number
facility. Consequently we are looking at using the Telstra "Hot
Number" option so that she only has to lift the handset and wait and
the exchange will connect her to the pre-set number.

000 isn't a problem as the hostel is staffed to cater for those things
and in reality it may be that she is even making calls to 000 without
her realising it!
