Tek 455

A

Asimov

Hi,

A friend emptying his closet sent me a Tek 455 that was previously given
to him in turn.

From a cursory visual inspection, all the boards seem intact and clean,
however I found the crt & graticule was missing... pretty hard to miss!

So I'm wondering if a crt is available used or NOS and what it may cost?
Or even simply if it's economically worthwhile?

Any comment(s) appreciated...

Economically,it depends on what the replacement CRT costs.I doubt you will
find a NOS CRT,it's long odds. Most likely you will have to find a parts
scope to cannabalize.

455's weren't the greatest TEK scope, but they were OK,IIRC,50Mhz
BW.Supposed to be a 'ruggedized' portable, but the plastic 'chassis'
flexed, and the connectors for the side modules were problematic, the tin
plated ones were replaced by gold,IIRC.Also, the vertical hybrid tended to
develop 'jitter'.(black pin-type heatsink IC-hybrid in vert module)

The crt shield is missing too. Just wondering if the scope wasn't
cannibalized of its crt for a better scope. Might this then mean the crt
may be a common part to the 45x line or exclusive to the 455? Either way
would you know what part # should I look out for?

Makes sense, the sweep timing goes to 0.05us or maybe better with the
x10 mag.

Okay, they are all gold connections alright. I can see what you mean,
they could have used a 2nd lower frame from front to back to keep the
main board from flexing.

Right, the large heatsinked affair in the middle of the vertical board.
Do you recall if the jitter problem was the external solder aging or
the hybrid's connections inside the package? Maybe a bigger heatsink?

I saw some CRT's on ebay the other day I think and also try
torontosurplus I think they had some on their site.

You also need to make sure all other hardware to go with the CRT is
there.

Might be cheaper to buy a scrapper on ebay or one of the auction sites
to take parts from.

Manuals do appear on ebay once in a while from $10-70, being its a tek
it will have everything you need it in it, operating instructions,
service and calibration, and complete parts and schematics.

REMOVE the NOCRAP in my address to reply.

No all TEK manuals are complete service manuals.
Some models have an operator's manual AND a service manual, and TDS and THS
series manuals have NO schematics or component parts lists.(Module exchange
service only)

I have a Tektronix CRT and Shield.

The CRT part# is 154-0531-00
The shield part# is 337-1021-01

I believe they are from a 561 rack mount scope I scrapped for the
high voltage supply to fix a portable scope. I also have the power
transformer from the same scope.

The Power Transformer part# is 120-0575-00

Jim, do you have a manual to see if these will work for him?

Saved your part #'s until a determination of compatibility can be made.
Thanks!

Sorry,I can't recall specific CRT p/n's.

Problems with the hybrid itself.Bad IC die,IIRC.

I suspect that a 465 tube would fit except for the anode lead maybe not
being long enough.Might be the same tube. You'd have to check both manuals
for that.TEK even used 465 tubes in T922/932/35,I believe,with a change in
the anode connector(to a spade connector and a silicone boot).

... Dunno if we'll get that past the CSA und UL 'owever.

There is a Tek CRT-to-Instrument (and vice versa) cross-reference at:

http://www.reprise.com/host/tektronix/reference/crt.asp

You can use it to find out which other models used the same CRT, so
you can pick up a parts scope to cannibalize.

You can also check to see if Walter has one in stock, here:

http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/tek1.html

Good luck!
