Tachometer for electric trolling motor

I have a motor guide trolling motor on a Lowe 170 boat. The trolling motor is wireless with a foot and a ket fob control. This is a brushless d.c. motor that runs on 12 volts dc. I need some ideas on building a tachometer so I know about how fast the motor is running. Anyone know of a tach available on the market or how to build one? Thanks.

I would suggest that an ammeter in series with the power to the device will give you a good indication of the power it is developing.

Note that this may well increase if the motor gets fouled where a tachometer would decrease. In this case the ammeter is telling you how much power is being delivered to the motor. Assuming it isn't jammed, this will have a strong relationship with the propulsive power that is being generated.
