need some advice on where to start such as Books i want a no nonsense guides to electronics that teaches the basics what goes where and when to use it and how to 'put it all together '

Some of the ones that I always found useful was the SAMS books, one book was usually dedicated to a particular subject,
A good source of new or nearly new books at a good price is Abe's Clearing house.

Start on the "Electronics for Dummies" there's a free PDF online - two versions available.. - this one is really really simplified. and go over some youtube videos if you have some internet access. A good channel i used to watch thats easy to understand and has some good presentation is "Afrotechmods".
