Sony KV-2670 R has problems and is probably dead but please confirm

I have an old Sony 26 inch television: it is model KV-2670 R and I
purchased it in 1986. Recently it developed a problem where the left
half of the screen does not have the same contrast or brightnes as the
right half. The left side is darker and the pattern slowly tracks up
the screen. Is this tv just ready to be scraped or could this be a
degussing problem ? If I could repair this cheaply it might be my tv
in the garage ????? Thanks for any assistance. John

Horizontal foldover? It's not a degaussing problem.

That is usually caused by the failure of a capacitor that filters the
power supply to the video output circuit. If the picture is otherwise
bright, sharp and has good color it should be worth repairing. The
part is cheap (less than $5) and there's not much labor involved.

I agree on the capacitor. Given the age there are probably a couple
bad.
The 26" Sony crt from that era are not known for the best long life
color quality.
As a result I would suggest that when the estimate is provided that the
picture tube image quality be checked during the diagnosis at the shop.
If the OP is going to just scrap the set, see if any shop is willing to
take it for possible recycling/repair before it gets sent to the
landfill.
