Sony Bravia KDL46XBR9 Power/Standby blinking 10 times

My Sony KDL46XBR9 is doing the following:

1. Power on.
2. Will show video and audio for 10-15 seconds.
3. Audio will then quit.
4. TV will power off by itself.
5. Then power back on by itself.

This will repeat 4 times by itself, then will finally power down and then the Red Power/Standby LED will blink 10 times in a row repeatedly.

Any help identifying how to fix this would be much appreciated.

I was not able to figure out what the error is for 10 light flashes... I found a table that shows 8 and 11... but not 10.
Sony recommends a software update if the machine operates... or having it serviced.
That code is supposed to tell you what module is failing... because of how the set powers off, it may be very difficult to determine the cause by hand inspecting the modules in the TV. Best keep searching for a service manual or a table to tell you what the 10 blinks are for.
It seems as though a board replacement will need to be done... Which board is to be determined... and be incredibly careful with a software update... if the set powers itself off prior to completing the update, the set could be bricked and you may end up worse off for it.

How confident are you that replacing the BU board will fix this problem? I only ask because you indicated this is usually the culprit for the 10 blinks symptoms I'm having.

Do you also happen to know where I can order this board from? Two places that I've looked are showing this as out of stock. (Shopjimmy.com and tristatemodule.com)

I would get a price from Sony if they still have it in stock
Many manufacturers don't stock parts for gear older than around 4-5 yrs these days
it's the same where I work

I had noticed your name coming up on a bunch of www sites asking about the problem
I also read other sites going back to 2007 - 2012 that ppl were asking about this fault
for some it was a permanent fault, others intermittent. but the answer was usually always the same

Did you ask the *astards what the 10-blink code means?

I didn't ask Modus Link what it means, but according to the Service Manual for this model, this is what the 10 blinks code means, or the "possible location":

"Watch Dog Timer used to track micro processors, not to record errors."

Now, what and where the Watch Dog Timer is still a mystery to me, so if you have any insights into this would be very helpful.

I don't know. Is it possible that the unit is 'stuck' in the 'track microprocessors mode'? Maybe because one of the microprocessors has ffailed?
There's gotta be SOMEBODY that commercially services your unit that can at least give you an idea of what to do with it.

Thanks for your reply. I just had another flat screen fail on me. This time it's a Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma that I've had a little over 3 years and the power/standby light is blinking 14 times. It was manufactured in April 2011. The Sony I've only had for 4.5 years.

Just generally speaking, is this typical of the lifespan one can expect from flat screen TV's these days, or is my experience of TV's failing in 3 to 4 years an anomaly? I've had old style CRT TV's that have lasted 10-15 years or longer.

What is your experience with longevity of flat screen's? Is quality really that bad when all you can get from TV's is a few years? Very discouraging if this is the typical experience.

As far as know, most if not all display monitors are made in China, They are not know for quality control or reliability.
This is (as far as I'm concerned) a result of the 'go green' movement.
The chemicals required to produce these monitors are hazardous, and western civilization regulations preclude companies from spending the money to comply with laws.
The Chinese don't have any of these restrictions.
Designers believe consumer electronics have an accepted very-short life-span anymore, and design for short operating life. Then blame the Chinese poor quality control for failures.
I've heard people brag about the long-life of their equipment when they get a good one, and others complain about unexpected early failures.
Most people I know replace their monitors wth the newest whiz-bang model within 5 years, and don' experience a problem.
I think, we just have to accept that not many of the Chinese consumer models we see (for BOTH reasons above), are not going to last 10-15 years.
I do not believe your problem is unusual. And by the time you experience a failure, your monitor is already 3 generations behind, and you can't get parts for it.
That's my take. Other people have their own.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that my experience is not atypical. It's still a little depressing, but I guess makes some sense the way technology is progressing these days. Too bad they don't have some type of lease program so that you can lease a TV for 3 years and trade it in for a new model with the latest features, just like we do for cars. I wonder if there is some market opportunity for that?
