Small Marine Diesel

R

Robert Bates

Is there such a thing as a small marine diesel that will burn bunker fuel?
The guy who used to pump our waste oil tanks said that what they recovered
was cleaned and sold as bunker fuel...therefore, couldn't such an engine
burn filtered, straight used auto weight oils?

No, there is no such engine. Bunker fuel is thick and tar like. It is so
thick it has to be heated in order to pump it. Bunker fuel is used to fire
steam boilers, which in turn is used to run steam turbines these days. I
know because I have worked on these burner parts and pumps in the Portland
Ship Yard for "Cascade General". Which was "Dillingham" before them and
"Albinia Engine and Machine" before them. Not to many of us around who
remember Albinia Engine and Machine these days.

Thanks for the info. My Grandfather worked in the Portland shipyard shortly
before the war coating steam pipes with asbestos paste.

Just an aside. Did your grandfather die or suffer from lung/pleural sac
problems?

He had TB in the early '50's and died of heart problems in '95

Putting aside the question of bunker oil for the moment.

If you want to see a selection of small to large marine
diesel engins go to www.yanmar.com. Yanmar is a well
respected name in marine diesels.
