single chip music player

I am trying to help a friend find a chip that I suspect doesn't exist
but I have to give it a try. He wants a simple circuit that will play a
single song when a button is pressed (I have no idea why). I have found
a few voice recorder type chips that will do it that simply but they
don't have enough run time and the sound quality is low. Other than
that all I have found requires some kind of microprocessor and often
even a separate flash memory interface. Which all seems over kill way
to complex for the the stated purpose. Anyone know of any thing that
will fit the bill?

Look at the UM66. It can play simple melodies like "happy birthday",
it's used in greeting cards and such. It comes in a T092 packages and
can drive directly a piezo transducer or a speaker with a transistor.

there are available music chips that have factory programmed tunes in them.
Greensleeves, merry christmas, etc...

But if you want to chose the tune yourself you need a microprocessor of some
sort. I found that 2K of rom was suffuicient.

most small micros have a PWM output that can be used if you don't want to
go to the effort of making an R-2R divider for the DAC...
