Simple Circuit Design Help

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and fairly new to electronics, I am trying to design a circuit to have a DC output of 12V.

I have been given a 36V DC source and the 3 resistors with the below resistivity:

1kOhm
4kOhm
4kOhm

Does anybody have any simple circuit designs that would produce the 12V output or any help would be greatly appreciated

This is a Homework problem, so what is your best effort so far at solving it?

Think of the ratio of the required DC output to the available DC input. There is a very simple and basic resistor circuit that comes to mind ...

Your drawing is a bit unusual in that ground (0 V) is on top, but otherwise that's exactly what I had envisioned.

Would there be a better place to connect the ground? Or does it not really matter so long as the ground is attached at some point in the circuit?

Physically it doesn't matter.
By convention ground is usually connected to 0 V and placed near the bottom, positive supply near the top. Just have a look at some schematics e.g. on the internet or in your textbooks.

You can find different uses, too. E.g. when you're working with negative supply voltages where ground would be connected to the positive supply.
