simple amp

i am trying to build a simple audio amp. as simple as could be.my idea is to use a npn transistor like a switch.a 9 volt batt. is connected to a potentiometer, from it to the speaker ,and from the speaker to the collector on the transistor.then from the emmitter to the negative part of the 9 volt batt. . in betwwen the speaker and the tranistor is a resistor connected to the microphone then from it to the base of the transistor. i think i am going to use a 8 ohm speaker from radoshack and a 4 to 10 volt microphone. the transistor will be what meets the standards.my question is will this work. am i putting to much power on the speaker, should i be using a pnp transistor or what?
