Samsung SV-5000w world vcr

Just bought one of these, supposedly in near new condition but my immediate
impressions are lukewarm.

Of course, it's doing alot...PAL to NTSC...you name it.

But the playblack quality of even an NTSC tape is mediocre with a little too
much jitter.

I'm hearing also a whine that just doesn't sound right and have heard about
some power supply issues with this machine.

I would be very grateful to any tech who can give me tips and maybe some
preventative medicine on it......maybe I can get in there and beef up some
components?

Thanks for any help.

It may not like tapes recorded on another machine, and have tracking
issues. The whine may be related to a monaural audio track. Does the
unit play back a unit-recorded tape OK? Stereo OK?

if it ain't broke don't fix it!
that said, do the obvious: clean entire tape path, check the tape is
not crinkling slightly at the roller guides, check it isn't riding up
or down on the A/C head and above all change the pinch roller if in
doubt.

Will do....was planning on opening it up today. Stereo is ok....don't like
it's playback of storebought ntsc movies compared to my other vcrs.

I'll pop the cover and watch it today....it looks like (and I've read
elsewhere) that it has some power supply issues and I can see there is an
overall subtle degradation as the unit heats up....the motors are actually
sometimes pausing during rewind.

Like I say...if anyone has some specific tips that "should have" been in the
original Samsung design, let me know.

I'm recording some stuff on to DVD.....maybe the TBC in the DVD will clean
up some of the instability....we'll see.

in that case you could start by changing the capacitors in the power
supply. use only 105º rated types. if there is very poor filtering you
may get noise in the video circuits and other unpredictable behaviour,
but do check the tape path and possibly mode switch first.
