Roberts radio

Hi Graham,
It looks like you will have to dismantle the radio and visually inspect the boards components and switch connections.
If we can get it working without interference while on DC adaptor, then try and see why the batteries drain so fast.
You will need a multimeter and probably a soldering iron.
Take pictures while you take it apart and make notes if you find it easier.
Take some nice clear close up photos of both sides of the pcb and any switches, jacks etc.
Post them here and see if anybody can spot something obvious for you to check.

The radio is clearly drawing much more current than it should.
Also, is the adaptor designed for your particular radio? ie, 7.5v DC centre pin positive (example)?
