RFID tag system for home experimentation?

Does anyone know of a source where I can get RFID tags with the
transmitter/receiver (the thing that sends out signals to the tags and hears
back from them)?

I'm hoping to get them relatively cheap. I want to do some experimentation.

Digi-Key sells the Atmel AT24RF08-EK eval kit (which includes a reader
and 4 tags) for $99. The tags are a couple of dollars each separately.
