repeating character

2) bad keyboards can be replaced.
a) get a new keyboard from the company.
b) look for a keyboard for your model on e-bay
c) look for a broken laptop of the same model. Perhaps a broken
screen. You may be able to pick one up cheap.

3) some keyboard problems can be cleared up by putting the laptop on its
side and cleaning the keyboard well with a typewriter cleaning brush.

Good luck.

A drop of WD40 can't hurt. Try it ... what have you got to
lose???????????????????????????????????????????

I would be surprised if the laptop in question didn't use a membrane
keypad. I haven't seen a membrane keyboard fail with a shorted key but
it may be possible. WD40 is the last thing you would use on this type
of keyboard.

Perhaps the OP can open up the laptop and determine (if possible) the
type of keypad it uses.]]]th]]]

I had an Armada that would generate "Backspace" randomly. Really
irritating. No amount of cleaning would make any difference.

Finally, I downloaded a remapping program and turned the backspace key off.
I then assigned F12 to send a backspace when pressed. Worked good except
when using remote desktop to control another computer. The F12 wouldn't
send a backspace on the other end. I can't remember the name of the program
though, sorry. I remember downloading two or three till I found one I
liked. It worked niceley.
You could start here:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/KeyTwe...m/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=keyboard remap...

You keep saying that you can't get a new keyboard because it's a
laptop. This is most probably not true. On most laptops the keyboard
is removable; on the 2 DELL Latitudes I have it's almost trivial to
replace the keyboard. Try searching for your-laptop-model keyboard and
see if any vendors sell replacement keyboards for it.

It could attack the plastic. I use silicone spray for sticky keys on
my trusty IBM desktop keyboard. (20 years old and still going!)
More than likely this won't help the OP, though.

Silicone spray for keyboard contacts????

Silicone is an insulator and is migratory in nature. By that I mean
that you may intend to spray it as a lubricant on moving mechanical
parts but it will soon migrate to electrical contacts in close
proximity (eg. relays). Silicon grease was banned for use anywhere
around relay or other mechanical contacts in telephone exchanges back
in the 70's because it started causing havoc with open circuit or
intermittent contacts on relays.

Silicone spray for keyboard contacts????

Nope. On IBM keyboard keys there is a plastic pin which is inserted into a
plastic sleeve with a spring in the center. This is the part that I lube.
The keyboard contacts are two sheets of plastic laminated together.

1) Most laptops will accept an external keyboard. A USB keyboard should

Unfortunately, it's not so easy. IME, there's no way to disable the
integral keyboard in software. It must be physically disconnected. I
had a Toshiba Tecra 8000 which had a shorted Tab key. Holding down that
key on boot forces the machine into a diagnostic mode.

The only way to use the external keyboard was to disco' the internal one.

I picked up a good keyboard on eBay for $10. It was trivial to replace.
One small piece of plastic is pried off top, pull out the board,
disco' the ribbon, replace...

Might work...didn't on mine. I temporarily slid a piece of card stock
between the membranes, which disable the Tab key. The machine booted
normally, but soon exhibited other keyboard issues. My daughter must
have spilled something on it....

Right, you are talking about a membrane keyboard and the silicone
spray is simply for lubrication of the plunger. That's fine, and since
the possibility of the silicone migrating between the two mylar sheets
is extremely remote (impossible) then there will be no problem at the
membrane contacts.

Different thing though if they were mechanical switch contacts and the
silicone could get to them.

Buy a junk laptop on ebay. One with a broken display should be
cheap.
