RCA TV Sound Issue

We have an RCA Entertainment Series TV and lately, the sound goes out
and if we unplug it an replug it, it works immediately until the next
episode. It isn't the speakers, I did try using an alternate external
speaker system and the same thing happens. Any ideas? I'm not the most
technically inclined, but think between my husband and I we could
manage a repair if we had good directions. Thanks for any input :)

Suggest you hook up your TCE Chipper Checker to the EEPROM and reinitialize
the codes.... then with your ESR meter check for high ESR electrolytics near
and around the IF and demodulation circuitry. Of course you should check
for any leaky or otherwise faulty semiconductors and look for dry, cracked
or faulty solder connections.

On the other hand, maybe you should TAKE your television to a service shop
for at the very least, a repair cost estimate, so you can make an
intelligent repair decision with facts instead of internet wild guesses.
A qualified and knowledgeable tech will actually have to open'er up and
perform actual troubleshooting and testing with the proper test equipment.
This will be better for your television and SAFER for you and your husband.
The insides of a modern color television are a dangerous place for "not the
most technically inclined"......
You can go to the website for this newsgroup at
http://www.repairfaq.org/
once there, plan to spend some search time looking over the wealth of
troubleshooting tips, repair procedures, component testing methods and
IMPORTANT safety information.....

If this set has the tv guide function on it there were problems with corrupt
data being sent on the guide signal. Cure was to unplug the set and sound
would return or have the set modified to kill the guide signal (and CC) or
hope that your broadcaster will clean up your signal and the problem will go
away

Agreed: Strange as it seems, only Thomsom Produced Products have this unique
symptom.
They have known about it for years and constantly try to share the blame
with broadcasters. IMHO: why doesn't Thomson just issue a circuit change
bulletin to repair thes sets they already have in the field and redesign the
new products to they don't have this problem. I personally do not like
modifying a set, especially when it defeats any of the original features,
such as Closed Caption.
