Question about replacing a relay

I want to check the speaker relay in my audio receiver.
The relay is a DEC Type DH2SU 24VCD SSY134.

Do I need a special tool to remove the housing?

Some medium and large relays have a snap-on cover / housing. Smaller ones
are sealed-epoxied shut. If it is not removable, you may not be able to
easily tell. A look at the bottom (lead egress face) can tell. Some of the
snap-on covers have, I'll call them, dimples or notches on the longer sides.
This is where the cover "locks" onto the base -- tab and slot style.

Perhaps you can measure the coil voltage to see if it is _getting_ power,
then measure contact resistance (with NO audio out). I don't know when it
would be energized, so its hard to suggest further things. Speaker relay.
When is it on / off?

It energizes about 2 seconds after the receiver is turned on.
I was able to get the housing off by squeezing it lengthwise.

I verified that the contacts are closing when the coil is energized,
and I cleaned the contacts just to be sure.

Yeah, I said I was going to throw this Technics receiver away, but I
just can't...it's too nice. :)

I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop next week.
If their estimate is more than I want to pay, they will buy the unit
from me, fix it, and resell it.

I'm dying to know what would cause it to quit the way it did.

In my experience, you can use a really small screwdriver, or a pick to
open up the housing. Once in there, you can clean the contacts really
carefully - you do not want to bend anything. I have not seen too many
bad relays - usually they malfunction as a result of something else -
like the diode right near them, or a high ESR cap nearby. Hope this
helps - Tim
