Here's a little update - I got the new amp board eventually and had a bit of trouble relocating the pots for volume & bass control but it's otherwise gone well.
Finally have got everything wired up so that the unit plays audio and also charges BOTH the ipad an iphone at the same time.
When plugged into the mains power outlet, the charging function is not switched and runs permanently (as the original charger was like this I didn't bother changing it), but the amp has a power switch.
It doesn't currently look pretty but it works great and sounds great. There's a noticeable drop in volume when connecting the second device, but all I have as a mixer is resistors on each output before they're joined.
Subwoofer and amp heatsink are at the back.
Gonna test it for some time now to make sure it all works continuously, then once I'm happy I'll go to work on the cosmetic side of things.
