Possible to run 2 computers off a single 500w APC UPS?

If I only need brownout and brief power glitch protection not looking to run
the machines with the power off), is it possible to run two machines and
monitors off a single 500w UPS and get what I want? Seems like I recall
reading that the rating relates more to the time the UPS will power
connected equipment at rated capacity.

Talking about a 230w power supply on one and a 300w supply on another with
two monitors as well.

Power off the pole or inside house has gotten flaky lately.

Can't tell. If both PCs are not stuffed with drives and boards
and high speed P4s that consume lots of power you might be able to get
away with it. Also, what size are the monitors - the bigger the more
power hungry. The monitors might help you decide; their wattage is
probably on a label on the back. The power supply wattages of the cpus
are maximums; they may be consuming much less.

Somebody suggested not powering the monitors off the UPS, which I think is a
pretty good idea for the OP, since he's only looking to guard against
brownouts and short glitches in the juice. Otherwise, I'd say this is
pretty much correct.

This can be done only if the total power loading is less than the rating of
the UPS. The power supply may be rated at 300 Watts in a machine, but the
machine most likely will not pull that amount. The rating of the power
supply is an indication of the maximum load it can sustain without damage.
The average computer may pull about 150 to 180 Watts on the average with
peaks of about 250 Watts during heavy operation. Your average CRT monitor
will pull about 140 to 160 Watts depending on the model. Read the rear tag.

If you do not connect the monitors to the UPS, you should normally be able
to use both computers on a 500 Watt UPS. If you can get LCD screens this
may not be a problem either. The best solution is to invest in a second
UPS.

Here's the deal- recently had to resolder some connections on my sony
trinitron monitor right after some serious brownouts (looks like a wiring
problem or xformer problem at the pole- need to check w/neighbors) -
thinking the surges may have had something to do with it. PCs came out
unscathed because of the residual in the PC power supplies...

but yeah... I see your point on the monitors sucking juice.

would be nice if the UPS could shut off the monitors if this happens when
I'm gone...

APC you listening?

Programmable UPS??

FLAKEY POWER IS A SERIOUS ISSUE.
FIX THE FLAKEY POWER!!!!!!
Take it from someone who's lost everything to electrical fire
TWICE...and neither my fault...without warning.
You have been lucky enough to get the warning. Heed it!!

Last thing you want is to be riding your bike home from the
third grade...wow, look at all the cool fire trucks...oh $hit!!!

Yeah i hear ya-

If it was my place I'd fix it but I'm a renter... landlord is not worth a
damn on repairs... may have to move over this. I'm gonna replace the
outlets. Everything in the room dims when this happens, the room light off
of the wall switch etc. Sometimes when I power up the 32" Sony TV the lights
in this room dim for a second so makes me think wiring may be loose at
breaker panel or someplace else. Maybe bad breaker... Would like to check
the breaker panel... might do it if I get ambitious. Wonder how hard it
would be to get the electrical utility to come out and check the service
entrance. I live on the gulf coast in deep s tx., and the salt air does bad
things to anything metal- you should see my jeep ) Don't think it's
aluminum wiring here. Kinda wierd that flaky power just showed up... had
hurricane Erica come through not too long ago and the power never flickered
and now this happens...

One possibility- there was a palm tree growing into the outputs off the
xformer on the pole... you could see the lights dim when the leaves would
blow onto the output terminals... called the electrical utility... they came
out and half-assed trimmed it, but I wonder if the xformer was damaged
internally.
