Photovoltaic half as expensive as gasoline

M

Mauried

I just finished my contribution for the
google.org plug-in hybrid contest

I developt for this 4 calculators

MPG to miles per kWh

Miles per kWh to MPG

Miles per squaremeter

http://car.pege.org/2008-fuel/miles-per-squaremeter.htm

And how to compare the expenses for gasoline
with a credit payment for a photovoltaic

You have left out of your calculator the costs of having to
periodically replace the batteries in your car.
No one has as yet invented rechargeable batteries that last forever.
Please provide a list of battery manufacturers who will provide 10
year or more unconditional warranties for their batteries when used in
PHEV applications.

You left out the maintanance work at ICE cars

Exchange engine oil
Exchange air filter
Exchange fuel filter
Exchange oil filter
Exchange the belt for the valve

This work makes around $1500
for 100.000 km

I've just had to chuck 2 totally dead cellphone batteries. (NiMH) It's all
the same stuff at the end of the day.

OTOH the new super-capacity Li-ion for my Nokia gives 9 days standby
operation.

Trivial. A DIY job.

Exchange fuel filter

About once or twice in an entire car's lifetime, or maybe even not at all.

Exchange the belt for the valve

Every 100,000 km typically and not at all if it's a chain like my Saab.

No it doesn't.

I wish I could understand what you are saying in the youtube
video. Perhaps the next time you make a video you can get an
external microphone for your camera and put it closer to you
than the noise sources and improve the signal to noise ratio.
In one part of the video you are completely drowned out by the
traffic noise. Another recommendation is to have a pretty
girl in the picture and do the narration in a quiet studio and
then mix in some (very little) of the street noise from the
pretty girl picture. That combination will get you more miles
per view.

I am not sure what you are getting at when you have the ICE
mobility of liquid fuel per square meter at 8000 square meters
vs 20 meter^2 for PV?

peace
dawg

Its interesting to look at the battery claims for the Tesla EV,
undoutably the most expensive EV on the market and using incidentally
the most advanced Lithium Ion battery technology available.

All they will say about battery life is that the batteries should last
for around 120K miles, note the word should.
Also not clear what happens if they dont.
Whats conveniently left out is what time frame this represents, ie
over what period of time you have to do the 120K miles.
Lithium Ion batteries degrade with time , and degrade with
temperature.
Heating them to more than 40C drastically degrades the life, which
means dont leave your battery car parked in the sun.
Ive not found a single EV car manufacturer who will give a battery
life expressed in years , its always either miles or no information at
all.

Next time you go down to your friendly battery shop to buy a
replacement Lithium Ion battery for your laptop or your mobile phone ,
ask them what the warranty on the replacement battery is.

6 months plus a conditional further 6 months. 1000mAh battery for a Nokia
just bought last week.

Sorry, there was a deadline at 4th June to send this video

That 20m² PV and electric drive systems bring as much miles as
8000m² with Ethanol and ICE engine
