Phillips TV does not hold default channel

M

ms

I got a used 1992 Phillips 21" set. Set it manually to channel 73 for Dish
Network, to replace a smaller set at the same RF connection. It worked
normally with Dish Network, where the remote changes channels. Turned it
off, still plugged in and connected to Dish Network.

Next day, turned it on, it did not retain the previous channel 73 setting,
had defaulted back to channel 2.

The smaller older set was a 1985 Toshiba, but it retains the last channel
setting used, like any other TV I've used.

Is there a problem with the Phillips, or is this common in newer sets?

if you turn it off into standby with the remote, it should probably
switch on with the last channel watched. If however the hard on-off
switch on the set was used then it will revert to the forst channel
tuned in. in your case 2.

Should come back on with the channel it was shut off with unless you
unplug it or lose your power otherwise so no it's not normal.

Very common for the backup battery to fail on old Philips sets. Just replace
it.

There is a battery to retain the prevous channel setting?

I doubt my 1985 Toshiba has a battery.

No remote, so a hard off each time. Basically same with my 1985 Toshiba,
no standby, the Dish Network remote was used for power off. And it kept
it's channel setting.

many sets of that era used either a battery (if I recall philips were
usually 2.4v 110 mAh ) or a low voltage capacitor with a very high
capacitance value.
this served to feed the micro when set was off, and thus retain the
channel presets, user preferences for colour, brightness, vol/tone
(sound) etc.

Make sure that the TV's AC cord is plugged directly to the main outlet, and
not through the decoder box (dish box).

Many models of TV sets, when switched off, if they loose the AC supply, the
default user memory will be re-set to the default.

If the TV set is being used properly, it is possible that there is a defect
with the internal memory of the TV set in the area that works with the user
set-up. In this case, the set will have to be serviced. Some sets use an
internal battery, while some other's use an internal memory built in to one
of the microcontroler chips. If the fault is not directly from a memory
battery, then servicing the set can get fairly involved.

Is that in a place where Joe Blow can find it?

Been a long time since I did one, but as I recall it was, as b said above, a
2.4v NiCad, and I seem to recall that it was near the front of the chassis
around the middle somewhere. Quite obvious once the chassis was withdrawn. I
think it was like two small button cells sealed together in heatshrink
sleeving, and I seem to think two pins on one end and one on the other so
that you couldn't get it in the wrong way round, but as I say, been a long
time ...

looking but yah never know :)

We will shortly go off Dish Network, just use a roof antenna, then with
only 5 local channels, changing the channel manually will be no problem.
And with so little to watch, I usually only watch the PBS channel anyway.
