Odd problem turning on Sony XBR

Hello all,
I've got a 27inch XBR, cicra 1991. Sound and picture still
great. However, in the last couple of days, it's acting very weird
when it's first turned on. Instead of the normal relay "click"
and short delay before picture and sound,
there is now the same click, followed by a sound from the speaker
ckkkkkk ! for about 1/2 a second.
The TV appears dead for about 20 seconds, then, all by itself,
there is another relay click, followed by normal operation.

Any insight to the behavior appreciated.

Hard to determine without more information. It could be the infamous sound
module failure or it could be a power supply problem.

You might want to stop using the set any further and consider having it checked
out by a reputable repair shop.

This can be a problem that will progress and cause more damage unnecesssarily
if you continue to use the set in its current state. - Reinhart

module failure" ?

The sound module, which was for Stereo/MTS decoding, was built with surface
mounted electrolytic capacitors. These capacitors would leak electrolyte after
a few years and would dissolve the copper traces on the module. This would
eventually cause the module to fail and you would have problems like weak
sound, distorted sound, one channel missing, or no sound at all.

Sony part no. SBX1637.

This module has been used in a lot of products from several brands on TVs and
VCRs. The soultion is to remove the module from the mainboard and install a
new replacement in its place.

But, this is just one possibility. Your problem can be anything, so you really
have to get a professional to diagnose it for you to see if this is really the
